Knysna Municipality Water Learnership

Water Services Training Knysna Conserving Water for All

October 2016, Knysna - Water management is an issue of vital importance to us all. Last week 13 delegates from Knysna Municipality attended a 2-day workshop facilitated by The Water Academy at Lourie Park. Knysna Municipality demonstrated its commitment to providing clean water for all by investing in this valuable learnership for its team. The Water Academy provides much needed education in the field of water services and has already trained and issued Certificates of Competence to over 3000 learners in many municipalities around South Africa.

The course is a specific-outcomes based learnership in which students share information, problem solve and work in a team. Clearly defined modules ensure an understanding of clear and practical methods for impacting change and progress in water management. By the end of the training each learner is able to:

• Identify water and wastewater problems.
• Work as an effective team member and troubleshoot solutions.
• Organise and manage ones work responsibly to implement effective and efficient running of water and wastewater treatment.
• Communicate, act and report effectively.
• Demonstrate a clear understanding of water issues in a broader context of related systems.
• Use science and technology for the health of the community and the betterment of others.
• Express and act upon a sense of responsibility for the environment.

The programme of training was initiated by the Knysna Municipality. This specialist project has been outsourced to The Water Academy, represented during this seminar by facilitator Anne Smith. Self-assessment is key to the success of the programme. Students are encouraged to discuss and problem solve within teams to reinforce and build upon their existing knowledge of water management. Marius Pretorius, manager at The Water Academy opened on the first day: “This learnership is an investment in yourself, your children, your family and your community”.

Water is our most valuable resource. Knysna Municipality, supported by the Water Academy, aspires to achieving excellence in the area of water management. Together they intend to extend support and share information with other municipalities within the Garden Route on an ongoing basis in order that our environment is supported and all in our community benefit.
